This world-class refinery that came to being out of the expertise of the two oil giants, Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies, is located at Jubail Industrial City in the east of Saudi Arabia.

SATORP is a world-class refinery started operation in June 2014. The environmentally friendly that Jubail Refinery is producing a high proportion of white products from heavy crude oil. The refinery is one of the most advanced refineries in the world.

The relationship between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies is a global partnership that features exceptional expertise in the field of refining and petrochemicals, strong financing power and a strategic commitment to the industry. These traits are clearly manifest in both companies’ legacy of success in executing and operating refining projects.

SATORP was born in June 2008 when SAUDI ARAMCO and TotalEnergies signed Shareholders Agreement with respect to the design, construction, ownership and operation of a world-class, four hundred fifity thousand (450,000) barrels per day capacity petroleum refining facility to be located in Jubail Industrial City on the east coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

SATORP is the first project to be built and operated in Jubail II. On August 30, 2008, SAUDI ARAMCO and TotalEnergies signed the Articles of Association and agreed to form a limited liability company with the name SAUDI ARAMCO TOTAL Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP).

By July 2009 all of the EPC contracts had been awarded and the project teams were mobilized to their respective package locations all around the world to begin designing the various units of the refinery. While portions of the refinery were under construction across the globe, the in-Kingdom project teams were busy laying the ground work and infrastructure that would one day sustain the entire refinery and the Company’s administrative complex.

From the last quarter of 2010 up to 2013, the construction activity continued to gain momentum. As activity increased at the Jubail site, the number of construction personnel at the site at the peak of activity reached 45,000 people. Time is money, so construction continued around the clock on mega projects like these as the push to complete the project on schedule, safely and within budget insistently drove the project and corporate teams forward.

The process of starting up the plant and conducting integrity testing took months to complete. The refinery passed thousands of stringent tests. Every inch of the refinery was checked and rechecked for irregularities or problems to ensure a safe start up and successful operation since Safety is always top priority. Building the refinery involved the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction, Commissioning of 13 Lump Sum Turn Key (LSTK) EPCC contracts and Operation of 45 process units, utilities, and offsites (Tankfarm and Port).

The first products cargo was shipped on 23 September, 2013 which coincides with the Saudi national day. The Company commenced commercial operation in June 2014.
